Prince George’s County Educators’ Association Reaches Tentative Deal with PGCPS to Restore Wages and Provide Healthy Learning Environments

Upper Marlboro, MD—More than 10,000 Prince George’s County Educators Association Members will receive pay increases that were skipped during the recession.  An in-depth Washington Post article, “Prince George’s teachers reach a deal to restore raises lost during the recession,” written by Debbie Truong, explains the impact and next steps.

“It is a step away from the institutional neglect that educators have felt in Prince George’s County,” said Theresa Mitchell Dudley, president PGCEA. “She’s [Interim Prince George’s schools chief Monica Goldson] our hero because she’s changing the whole dynamic of how people feel.”

On top of regular step in­creases, the accord brokered between the Prince George’s County Educators’ Association and the school system restores pay increases that were skipped in the 2009-2010, 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 school years.

“We’re doing our best to make sure we retain our very best and brightest,” said Goldson, who has said the raises would come from cuts to central-office spending in the first year, while money for the second and third years could require program cuts.
