Statement on Prince George’s County Executive Proposed 2020 Budget

PGCEA President Theresa Mitchell Dudley Challenges Council to Fully Fund Schools

Prince George’s County, MD: After much anticipation, following the announcement of partial funding of the Kirwan Commission recommendations, and the 8,000 person rally in Annapolis demanding fair funding for schools, today Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks released her proposed budget. The 2020 budget proposal includes nearly 60% of the budget being allocated towards education. The proposal has a clear focus on education reform and a significant investment in school construction projects. The budget now has to be approved by the County Council, who has the ability to make cuts. We believe it is imperative for the Council to hold the same esteem for education and our future leaders by following the lead of the County Executive. Prince George’s County Educators’ Association President Theresa Mitchell Dudley released the following statement:

“We commend the County Executive on proposing a budget that is reflective of a clear commitment to our children and public education,” explained Dudley. We are hopeful that our representatives on the County Council will show the same commitment to education and fully fund the education budget. This is an opportunity for Council members to be on the right side of history, ensuring that PGCPS are funded to their maximum potential. It is also vital that the State Legislature fully support and enact the “Blueprint for Maryland’s Future.”
